Putting Service Before Self-Interest

“So Christ Himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity…” – Ephesians 4:11-13 (NIV)

In the above passage of Scripture, we observe the various roles within the church. The first verse highlights the source of authority: “Christ Himself.” It is the Godhead who bestows these gifts upon people. While some may claim that these roles are human creations, Scripture makes it clear that these offices are of divine origin, not man-made.

The purpose of these roles is to equip the saints for ministry. The leadership gifts given by God are meant to prepare His people for service so that the body of Christ may grow – both in strength and number.

God’s people are called to do the real work of ministry, and church leaders are responsible for equipping others for service and guiding them as God leads. Each of us is called to serve in God’s Kingdom, building up one another. Our service must reflect Christ, for He has called us to this task.

What distinguishes true service from self-interest is our motivation. Whom are we truly serving as we serve others? Are we seeking recognition from people? Do we expect rewards from those we help? Do we serve only when we know someone is watching?

We are all called to serve God and one another in His Kingdom. As we go about our day, let us take a moment to reflect on what it means to place service above self-interest. Let’s take stock of our hearts – acknowledging that we are human and prone to mistakes — yet knowing that coming before God, Who has called us to serve, makes all the difference.

Today, lay aside your personal agendas and embrace God’s agenda as He directs us to serve others.
